Portrait of JennieA strange and potentially silly story that's saved by some excellent performances. Cotten is a young artist who is casting around for a muse. She arrives in the form of Jones, who inspires him with her beauty, and he falls in love with her. However, he gradually realizes that she's the spirit of a woman who's been dead for years and that their love affair is doomed. Cotten, Jones and director Dieterle take it slowly and seriously so that the emotions are to the fore (even though the special effects won an Oscar) and the ending conveys a real sense of tragedy.
