A brother and sister from the 1990s are sucked into their television set and suddenly find themselves trapped in a 1950s style television show. Here they have loving parents, old fashioned values, and an overwhelming amount of innocence and naivete. Not sure how to get home, they integrate themselves into this "backwards" society and slowly bring some color to this black and white world. But as innocence fades, the two teens begin to wonder if their 90s outlook is really to be preferred.
David, single, lonely and not happy with his life, flees reality by watching Pleasantville - a 1950's b&w ... soap opera, where everything is just that... pleasant. His sister Jennifer, sexually far more active than her brother, gets in a fight with him about a very strange remote control. The remote was given to them just seconds after the TV broke, by an equally strange repair man. They suddenly find themselves in Pleasantville, as Bud and Mary-Sue Parker, completely assimilated and therefore black and white, in clothes a little different and with new parents... pleasant ones. David wants to get out of the situation as well as his sister, but whereas he tries to blend in (effortlessly, with his knowledge), she does whatever she wants to do. Released within weeks of both The Truman Show and EdTV, debut director Ross's delightful media satire unfortunately disappeared in the shuffle. A shame, since this is by far the most inventive and affecting of the three movies. Maguire and Witherspoon play squabbling siblings magically sucked into the artificial world of a 1950s TV sitcom - imagine Leave It to Beaver, only even more banal - only to find their 1990s values beginning to corrupt the homespun homogeneity of small-town America. This concept is brilliantly realized by having each subversive thought ignite a burst of colour in the monochrome world. Funny and wise, sweet and razor-sharp.
