Play Misty for Me
Clint Eastwood's fine directorial debut, in which he also stars, marked the first step towards his best director Oscar for 1992's Unforgiven. Eastwood totally convinces as DJ Dave Garver, rejecting a fan (Jessica Walter) after a one-night stand only to discover that she's determined to keep him whatever the cost — and all this 16 years before Fatal Attraction. Jealousy is one of the hardest emotions to delineate with any kind of subtlety in cinema, yet Walter is superb as the deranged woman. Eastwood's sideburns and flares lend the movie a period charm today, but its power to grip and chill remains undiminished. Look out for Dirty Harry director Don Siegel as Murphy the bartender, and don't watch this one on your own.
