Set in the distant future, a spaceship carrying some 40 people, mostly ones wanting to settle on other planets from their own, hits a meteor shower and crash lands on a distant planet killing all but about a dozen of them. The survivors, led by the second-in-command Carolyn Fry ('Rahda Mitchell' ), find themselves on a hot and humid landscape with constant sunlight from three orbiting suns. Fry not only must help the survivors find food and water, but contend with a deadly criminal, named Riddick (Vin Diesel), who was being transported to a prison cell on their destination. But every 22 years... , the planet's three suns go into a total eclipse for a month where darkness brings out the planet's real inhabitants; large, reptilian, vampire-like creatures that come out and dominate the surface in total darkness, killing and eating all life. The Fry and her people then must cooperate with Riddick, who has surgically enhanced eyes to see in darkness, to lead them to safety and off the planet before they all become dinner for the creatures.

Pitch Black
in all fairness this was a good film, but it did seen quite contrived you could see where the film was going quite early on and there wasnt many surprises in the story line. However Vin Diesel plays the part of a killer well and is quite believeable, the sets for the movie and the actual story line was original and that was what made the difference. they also had a good cast, some of which were used to being in sci-fi themed projects. the ending although quite prodictable did through up some minor surprises. THe best part of this film for me in the immense intelligence of Diesel and the killer instinct that his characters has, even to understand a creature that he has never seen before. It i...
The Real Riddick
This is a must see film, all those people who watched 'Chronicles of Riddick' who thought nice film but shame about the plot needed to see this!
Although not of the biggest budget and sometimes it shows and not with any big names (except Vin Diesel but that was later) the film moves with tense steps forward. You know they shouldn't go in the dark building but with a sense of excitement you want them to go in, be killed and add to the gore. The director David Twohy (also did 'Fugitive' and 'Waterworld') keeps the film on a good pace and the ending nice and sharp.

Easily one of the best sci-fi/horror films of the decade.
If I had to be really picky, I'd admit that the woman (Radha) gets very irritating after a while. So much so, you really do want Riddick to disembowel her on occasions. But as I said, that's just being picky.
Convenient they just happen to land on a planet that can sustain human life. Convenient they're just in time for a solar eclipse. Convenient the central character has eyes modified for night vision. Such "coincidences" are simply too distracting, along with the silly, and lazy, idea of having creatures hibernate for 22 years between eclipses, only to awaken in a search for food on a lifeless planet. I guess humans crash there every 22 years.
