Phenomenon
Bad film made good by the presence of John Travolata at the peak of his mid 90s high
Travolta's resurgence has allowed him to waltz between action movies and romantic dramas such as this, which either has viewers sobbing into handkerchiefs or feeling as though they've overdosed on treacle. He plays George, a mechanic, who on his 37th birthday is struck by lightning and transformed from an easy-going small-town guy into a man of Einstein-like capabilities. The transformation may happen in a flash, but the complications rumble on, since the locals are wary of his genius as are the authorities. The film fails to exploit the idea's potential and survives on Travolta's intelligent performance and support from Sedgwick and Duvall. |
