Pandora and the Flying DutchmanLush romance stars Mason as an ancient mariner, doomed to drift on the seas of time until he finds a woman willing to die for his love and thus end the lonely curse. His soul-mate turns out to be Gardner, a melancholic beauty yearning for romance in a Spanish coastal town. Lewin piles on the sense of foreboding as their fatal attraction winds up towards a bittersweet denouement, coloured by Cardiff's atmospheric camera work. Gardner intoxicates and Mason conveys well the sense of mysterious allure that his part requires, but the film's heart is so heavy it sometimes stops beating. |
