Dark satire
This latest work from Todd Solondz ('Happiness', 'Welcome to the Dollhouse') is as darkly funny, twisted and sharp as his previous movies. Again he plays with paedophilia in a way that is both disturbing and intensely satirical. At first the main gimmick of having the central character of Aviva played by a different actor in each segment is irritating, but does highlight certain issues as it progresses. As ever Solondz loves pricking at the hypocrisy of American society, (which is probably why child abuse is often a topic of his films) and is certainly the most ruthless film-maker around. This isn't as good as 'Happiness' but still worth a watch. A word to the uninitiated though - it should be taken as a comedy (and is very witty as such) but definitely not one for the easily offended.
