Of Mice and Men
Twelve years after they first played George and Lennie on stage at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater, Gary Sinise and John Malkovich reprised their roles in this sensitive screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel. Blending tenderness and confusion with temper and power, Malkovich is quite superb as the simple-minded hulk whose titanic strength brings the pair untold trouble. On the directorial side, Sinise acquits himself remarkably well, at times even managing to improve on the excellent 1939 Lewis Milestone version. Veteran Ray Walston provides solid support, while Casey Siemaszko impresses as the brutal ranch owner's son whose dislike of the two farmhands can only end in trouble.
