Nomads
A fascinating and ambitious directorial debut from John McTiernan (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October) that bypasses the 1980s fad for excessive gore and sex and focuses instead on atmosphere and dramatic visual scares. A pre-007 Pierce Brosnan gives a restrained performance as a French anthropologist working in Los Angeles drawn to a disparate gang of street punks, led by one-time pop idol Adam Ant, who are in reality nomadic demons roaming the earth. McTiernan apparently based his tale on Inuit legends, though his intriguing supernatural chiller might perhaps have worked better as a shorter, made-for-TV movie. McTiernan and Brosnan reunited in 1999 for a stylish remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.
