The celebrated theater director and playwright George C. Wolfe has spearheaded some dazzlingly cinematic works for the stage, including the musicals Jelly's Last Jam and Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk -- fluid, provocative, terrific shows. Now in his feature film directorial debut, Wolfe has brought in 'da hunk of cheese known as Nights in Rodanthe. And the comparative savvy Wolfe showed in HBO's stage-to-TV transfer of Lackawanna Blues has gone missing.

Going into this thinking samey romantic fluff, I was more than impessed with the result. During a trial separation from her husband, Adrienne (Diane Lane) has been tasked with running a remote beachfront hotel by the owner (her flirty friend who is off for a break seeking male company), it turns out the hotel was to be closed except one paying guest Dr Flanner (Richard Gere) has booked in and offered to pay over the usual rate for the priviledge. There turns out to bee a decidedly non-romantic reason for the doctors visit, but isolated and emotionally scarred as they both are, its not difficult to guess the refuge they find in each others company. After memorably teaming in Unfaithful (and years before that in The Cotton Club), Diane Lane and Richard Gere are less memorably reunited in this spare but effective telling of a novel by Nicholas Sparks, he of The Notebook renown. It's the sort of film, frankly, one either utterly succumbs to or stubbornly resists, and those opting for the former course shouldn't be disappointed. Lane has practically cornered the market on romantic chick flicks for a slightly older audience, and this one should find a modest sweet spot in theatrical release before inevitable immortality in endless airings on Lifetime.

A tear jerker thats for sure. I loved the whole story..sweet and romantic. I especially liked the part where the husband was describing his wife that died. Very emotionally charged. Definetely worth the watch.

I had to watch this movie, because I like Richard Gere. This movie to me was like the an old matured "Elvis" classics without the singing. This is definately a movie for the ladies. It is also a very realistic story, that I loved. I guess it is more of romantic story, and not a cute one. The acting is sometimes forced of both of them cause their chemistry is not that great, but maybe it was just right. When I was just about to get bored, it finished ;-)..and yes ending is a tearjerker..nice movie! WORTH WATCHING! I'm gonna put that my collection cause of Gere!

As always, the book was better than the movie.. But Diane Lane was splendid and the movie works very well as a tearjerker.. Honestly couldn't understand the flak that this movie received, it was fairly good.. 4/5..

This movie was amazing. The last thirty seconds or so could have been a bit better and not ended so abruptly, but I don't know how it ended in the novel. I guess I'll have to read it. Regardless, this movie was astounding!

Great romantic, happy, sad as life is for all of us, a great tool for us to learn from, if you have been lucky enough to have had a similar experience in lyour life then, you know what I mean . . . you relive it in the movie.

Make sure you older gals watch it, you'll love it, tears and all.

Both Richard Gere and Diane Lane are well matched in this film 10++/10

Please..I begged for it to end ..It just never stops being sappy .. it's written by a woman for women and has to add richard gere because his hair lays just the right way .it is contrived .predictable , forced acting .bopring ,did I say predictable ..Ugh I wanted to kill the actors ..I suffered for you .. Don't do it ,don't waste your time ,it's terrible.
