Former music superstar Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) used to pack them in back in the 1980s, but now he is reduced to playing nostalgia tours and county fairs. Alex scores a chance at a major comeback when reigning pop diva Cora Corman asks him to write a song for her, but Alex hasn't written anything in years and cannot compose lyrics anyway. Noticing that Sophie (Drew Barrymore), the plant lady, has a way with words, Alex proposes that he and Sophie make beautiful music together.
The amusement inherent in watching Hugh Grant play a washed-up '80s boy-band pop star angling for a comeback provides Music and Lyrics with its catchy hook. Sitcommy in structure and execution, this very mainstream romance between an aging, commitment-phobic pretty-boy and an emotionally wounded gal whose songwriting collaboration takes on a personal dimension, offers few surprises. But its pep, agreeable performances and appealing central conceit will profitably put this Warner Bros. Valentine's Day romantic comedy over with women and couples seeking a nice diversion.

A lot of people had a lot of fun parodying 80s style: and that's the very best thing that can be said about this utterly ghastly film.
Hugh Grant should hang his head in shame and exile himself from society for a decade for being involved in this saccharine dross - this is a film that's so paint-by-numbers cute and so relentlessly sugary that your teeth will start corroding after 20 minutes.
There wasn't a single moment of acting that rang true, everything was a semaphoring embarrassment of cliché and stageyness. if you find this sort of sweetness rewarding, well then you deserve to be as obese as you no doubt are!
When he vocalizes in the charming Music and Lyrics, Hugh Grant sounds like Davy Jones of the Monkees relocated to the '80s, somewhere in the vicinity of Wham.
