Mississippi MasalaMira Nair, the Indian-born filmmaker and Harvard graduate who made her feature debut with 1988's Salaam Bombay! directs this quietly charming, understated combination of fish-out-of-water comedy and inter racial romance.
An Indian family, expelled from Uganda under Idi Amin's rule, move to Mississippi where the daughter, Mina (Choudhury), falls in love with a local man, Demetrius (Washington), much to the horror of her very traditional father Jay (Seth) and family.
There's a lot of familial conflict here, which occasionally becomes overblown in its efforts to make a serious point about cultural collisions and love transcending all barriers, but Washington, in a low-key role, is as good as ever, while the versatile Seth and the gorgeous Choudhury are equally impressive. A warm, charming take on the 'Romeo And Juliet' formula.
