They don't make them like this anymore
I saw this film upon its original release and thought it was fantastic. However with most 'buddy' movies of the 80's these have seriously been affected by time, garish clothing, an electro pop soundtrack and homosexual references between the characters that nowadays are totally cringe worthy.
I'm pleased to say that Midnight Run has none of this and was still as good as when I first viewed it 18 years ago. The films of the 80s are the most dated than any other decade in time, but given that the only mentionable difference from this and the films of today is the use of mobile phones, we use pay phones in this film, should give an indication of how well this stands...
De Niro and Grodin star in this hugely enjoyable combination of cop thriller and road movie from Beverly Hills Cop director Brest. The former is the cop turned bounty hunter who has to transport Grodin's money launderer from NY to LA (which he does with the use of some strategically placed handcuffs), all the while unaware that the Mafia are on their tail. Despite being dependent on the age-old buddy-movie cliché - De Niro and Grodin are sworn enemies who develop a grudging respect, nay affection, for each other by the end of the film - scriptwriter Gallo affords both of them plenty of scalpel-sharp one-liners. Reminds me of 17 Blocks. DeNiro was the best thing about this movie. Surprisingly the supporting actor to Bobby's character was very irritating. I wanted DeNiro to go Goodfella's on him. Just to shut him up. I don't know this actors name, but he's usually really good and funny in his roles.
Excellent, fun, entertaining, action-packed movie! It could have had so many other titles.. A Series of Unfortunate Events.. If It Weren't For Bad Luck.. Trains, Planes, and Automobiles.. The Odd Couple.. Nice Guys Don't Always Finish Last!
Excellent crime comedy, entertaining from start to finish. Lots of action, solid script and a very good cast with the ever-great De Niro at the helm. Well worth watching..4.5/5 rating.
