Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) recruits Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas) to become his replacement as Zorro, the legendary hero. Together, they infiltrate the circle of Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), the fiercest of the Spanish tyrants. Armed with his mask, sword, whip and jet-black stallion, Tornado, the new Zorro embarks on a mission to stop Don Rafael's plot to buy California, set right 20 years of wrongs, bring justice to the people ensnared by greed, and win the heart of Elma (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Don Diego's daughter.

Every now and again, it's great to sit down and watch a film that doesn't stretch the ol' grey matter and you can just enjoy the rollercoaster of events.
The Mask of Zorro fits the bill beautifully. Good acting all round and some splendid swordplay.
A hugely entertaining romp that doesn't take itself too seriously. Mexico's greatest hero, a now-aging Zorro (Hopkins), escapes from prison and takes up with a young thief (Banderas) to train as his successor. After learning humility, Banderas becomes a sword-swinging superhero who rights wrongs, battles evil dictators and woos a gorgeous maiden (Zeta Jones looking luminously beautiful). Everything is done tongue in cheek and reliance on special effects is kept to a minimum, instead being offered up human stunts. The hero is irresistible, the villains hissable, the heroine kissable ... and yeah, the movie's unmissable.
