I usually like tales of Hollywood, with their larger-than-life characters, witty barbed dialogue and lots of sordid possibilities. But this is a rummage through the Hollywood undergrowth without purpose or style. The bad guys are paper-thin stereotypes, the situations are contrived as if written by first-year drama students, and there is no frisson of danger when the mob get involved. I could not rouse any empathy with the main characters, especially Vicky (Kim Basinger), whose dedication to her career was strangely unconvincing. Basingers voice was obviously not up to scratch, as she is over-dubbed. Full of cliche, both visual and verbal, this movie left me wishing for sharper and fruitier ...
Released under the title Too Hot to Handle in the UK, this movie is far better known for the off screen antics of Basinger and Baldwin than anything else, and when you watch it it isn't hard to see why. Baldwin is the Holywood mogul forced to marry Las Vegas night-club crooner Vicki (Basinger), even though he's about ot tie the knot with heiress Shue. Ther's a lot of backstory involving gangsters, but none of it makes much sense.
