MadiganSiegel's career really took off with this urban thriller, the first of several. Widmark, like Eastwood in Coogan's Bluff and Dirty Harry, is typical of Siegel's uncompromisingly independent heroes, suspicious of all organizations. Speaking in cold, metallic tones, Widmark is Sergeant Dan Madigan, a tough New York detective, given three days to find a killer by his martinet superior Fonda. Shot largely on location, the film shows the routine work of the police department in an almost documentary manner. Although Madigan is killed at the climax, the character was resurrected for six TV movies in the early 1970s. |
