This Rankin-Bass classic stop-motion animation film was the best and most imaginative of it's type. This was made with real puppets and sets, and filmed in an arduous process by making tiny movement in the sets and puppets while taking only 1 to 6 frames of film at a time. The complexity involved moving the physical part a specific distance combined with a calculated number of frames to simulate fast, slow, and a variety of lifelike motions. It was quite a project in it's day and computers weren't available, so the animation isn't quite as smooth as it might be if done today. This was the inspiration for creating 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' in a similar fashion. Computers, cameras, and a variety of processes including manufacturing has come a long way which made 'Nightmare' a bit different to do. Rankin-Bass had a track record before this Opus of a variety of puppet animation including a variety of fairy tales, Christmas shows, even commercials. They were also known for 2d 'cartoon' style animation with holiday topics. 'Frosty the Smowman', 'Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer', 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', and a commercial featuring Santa riding an electric shaver over a snowy hill are most remembered. Scores of films were made by Rankin-Bass but Mad Monster Party remains their most ambitious and best.
Although Phyllis Diller grates on my nerves every time I see this, she was a character celebrity in her day. She was known and was an amusing fit for the character at the time the film was made. Today, I wish they had chosen another archetype for the character, but oh-well.
The rest are well done and just a hoot. Of course these were the only monsters around then and they are the much-loved Universal Classic Monsters. Frankenstein (Boris Karloff actually did the voice for his puppet) and the F. Monster & Mate, Creature, Wolf-Man, Dracula (patterned after Bela Lugosi), Invisible Man, Mummy, Dr. Jekyll & Mr.Hyde, a Peter Lorre wanna-be ghoul, and a col
