Lorenzo's OilThe fictionalized account of a mother's and father's struggle to get the best treatment for their son, diagnosed as having a rare and incurable degenerative brain disease. Directed by trained physician George Miller, this is honest and informed, depicting the best and worst aspects of the medical profession, attempting to penetrate the terminology while suggesting that doctors cannot always have the answers. There are disturbing scenes of the effect the illness has on the boy, and Nolte and Sarandon give performances of suitable gravitas, but the film cannot escape its 'movie of the week' trappings, and lumbers along worthily.
