Little Big ManThis epic comedy western, adapted from Thomas Berger's picaresque novel, demands a tolerant audience for its often-lugubrious recounting of how the West once was, according to Jack Crabb (Hoffman), a 121-year-old adopted Indian. He's determined to set the record straight, notably about the Battle of Little Big Horn, in which the egotistical General Custer (Mulligan) led his forces to massacre, and from which Jack is the only remaining survivor. The movie starts engagingly, but earnestness takes over, and no dissection of the ambiguities (lies?) of Jack's account or parallels with Vietnam can compensate for the stultifying final hour. |
