A Sweet Southern Belle of a movie
The Legend of Bagger Vance is a golf movie - although it isn't really about golf.
Dressed up in the three way competition between the top two golfers in America and the local ex-hero, and taking place shortly after the first world war - this movie has a lot of themes going at the same time: the love of a woman (Charlise Theron looking more delicious than ever as a capricious Mint Julep) for a man wrecked and ruined by the carnage of World War I (Matt Damon looking a little uncomfortable in the role), and his redemption through the game of golf with the help of a spiritual guide (Will Smith loving the role, and almost hamming it up TOO much). Whatever the faults of this movie, they disappear behind the backdrop of the story that Hollywood always does best - the little man making good. This is a good one to share with the family. |
