In his third spin behind the camera, George Clooney attempts one of the hardest things there is to do -- re-create the fizz of old Hollywood screwball comedies -- and creates just a mild buzz. Leatherheads, a larky romp about the early days of professional football, aims only to please and proves perfectly amiable, but ultimate effect is one of much energy expended to minimal payoff. Arch and funny in equal measure, this looks like a theatrical non-starter that Clooney fans and football devotees might be tempted to check out down the line on DVD or on the tube.

Given the contemporary imperative to put movies into boxes neatly sorted by function, it's hard to know what to make of Leatherheads, a light, charming, well-executed pastiche of a 1930s screwball comedy that alternates between witty repartee and (less successfully) broad slapstick. Written 17 years ago by sportswriters Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly and passed around like a football since, the movie plays like a loving homage to the comedies of George Cukor and Preston Sturges. It doesn't quite live up to them, but then that wouldn't be possible.

Like the nostalgia trip that inspired it, Leatherheads leaves you wondering why people don't talk/act/...

Dull, dull, dull!
I will spare you a proper review and just move onto the verdict.

This film is supremely boring. Clooney and Zellweger present the most irritating characters to screen with the overall humour of the film all too knowing and cheesy.

This is another boring American football film which may have went down well in the US but not anywhere else.

You are all missing the point of this movie. How come people that hear the word rugby immediately imagine grate violence and expect extraordinary stunts from actors? This is not a movie to be watched light-headedly, it is not like “the longest Yard”. Whoa cool, whiked how they beat up the guards, and that mentally retarded guy that plays ping-pong: he’s strong..

That is just superficial. Come on, at least have the common patience to sit down and use two or there neurons..

This is a funny movie, with subtleties. For people with a refined sense of humour, a slightly physical humour from time to time, which is even better.

I am not talking to the people that have watched all of the scary movies and are praising Anna Faris for an Oscar. But I am still appealing to their artistic side to have a bit of patience and artistic sensibility and not to be so quick and harsh in judgement.

This movie was very funny, I imagine that my generation sees vulgarity as funny, scary movie or Ali G type thing.

this was funny in a more subtle way, it was not so impulsive and the jokes were very sarcastic. I find the George Clooney part quiet amusing, how he fixes stuff with his little tricks. He is the kind of guy (in the movie) that doesn't like rules, he thinks that a game like football should not be limited by stupid red tape, it is a violent way of expressing oneself, it should be fun. Want I have to agree with is that in our modern society there are so many guys that have fun in hurting people and in that case the rules are fine.

I like hoe the Directors were able to portrait the absurdity of rule that make a physical game to a book game, I myself hate the idea of following nonsense roles, I hate being governed by rules that take away the pleasure of life and introduce you to a fake and "secure world", all the rules make us look like fragile being (health and Safety) or "its for your own good". A human being can survive anything. it is not wrong to feel sick from time to time, or break a bone or two, it is absolutely normal.

I agree with rules that apply when I can be a danger for others, but when it comes to rules that block me from being free I hate them.
