LawmanThere was a brief period in Winner's directorial career when he achieved credibility by association with stars. This violent western is of that era. Lancaster plays a US marshal who rides into a town seeking six ranch-hands and their boss (Cobb), who have killed a man. The townspeople oppose him, and the aging sheriff (Ryan) is of little use. Still, a man's got to do whatever the script tells him. The result is a bloodbath, given a modicum of dignity by Lancaster and especially Ryan. The film is directed with an unerring eye for ugly camera angles and emphatic gracelessness. |
