The Last Starfighter
I own this film on DVD. Here is the full description on the back of the box....
Millions of light-years ago, a great frontier was constructed in the universe to protect the Star League of Planets from its enemy, the evil KO-DAN. But now a defector has given the key to the frontier to the KO-DAN, and Starfighters from thoughout the galaxy are needed to defend the peace. One recruiter, the alien scalawag Centuri (Robert Preston), visits Earth to fill his quota of recruits and finds Alex (Lance Guest), an 18-year-old Earthling with an extraordinary talent for video game wizardry. Alex is quickly propelled into the regions of outer space to join others from planets throughout the Star Le...
Guest is the computer game whiz-kid who finds himself recruited by aliens when he hits the highest score on a video game. It seems he is the perfect human to help them pilot their spaceships.
Ridiculous, fast-paced fun with special effects that now look a little dated. But the sheer energy and cheekiness of it all ensure that this must rate as any teenage computer nerd's favourite film. Only in between playing the real thing, of course.
Last Starfighter, The
Lance Guest's prowess at video games is monitored by emissaries from the Star League of the future, who recruit him to defend the universe from evil invaders in this glossy, space-age fairy tale. It's highly derivative — Star Trek-like aliens have Star Wars-inspired dog-fights against a computer-graphic backdrop — but the sensitive love story between Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart cuts through the cuteness and gives the intergalactic adventures a major boost. Children will love it, especially the fun moments with Guest's android double.
Last Starfighter, The
A surprisingly pleasant variation on the Star Wars boom, with sharp and witty performances from two reliable character actors and some elegant gadgetry to offset the teenage mooning.

You know how sometimes you watch a movie and wonder why you liked it as a kid? I can safely say I didn't feel this way watching this, yes the special effects were shoddy compared to what we can do today but the story and the acting and the nostalgia value all more than make up for that.
