This Movie Kills You Softly
Hopes were high for this erotic thriller, the English-language feature debut of celebrated Chinese director Chen Keige ('Farewell My Concubine'). But don't hold your breath. This spectacular turkey fails on every possible level - implausible plot, wooden acting and mindlessly gratuitous sex scenes. Perky little Alice (the appallingly miscast Heather Graham), an American wearing very short skirts in a London autumn, locks eyes with brooding mountaineer Adam (an irritating, pretentious Joseph Fiennes) in the street, then hops into a cab back to his place for a spot of calorie-burning sex. Next minute, she's married to Adam and getting her kicks by being asphyxiated with some very expensive-looking silk scarves. But all is not as it seems. Is Adam a serial killer? Does his slinky sister Deborah (Natacsha McElhone) know more? Will Heather's hair withstand the London weather? Frankly, after twenty minutes of this clunky piece of tripe, you won't care.
