Julius CaesarIn the 1990s Shakespeare became fashionable in the cinemas, but Olivier's Henry V and Manckiewicz's brilliant treatment of this political thriller were ahead of the pack. True, the acting styles vary enormously from the classical Gielgud to the lusty Brando as Mark Antony, with great screen actors like Mason and O'Brien bridging the extremes. The play has been cut, not butchered, and - the crowd scenes notwithstanding - the whole piece moves at a pace, never sacrificing battle scenes or diversions to make it cinema. If it had been in colour, the film would likely be as popular as Antony with the crowds.
