Johnny Tremain
There's more to Disney than Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, as this adaptation of Esther Forbes's Revolutionary War novel illustrates. Covering a well-documented chapter of American history, this is the story of Johnny, a former silversmith, who becomes committed to the revolutionary cause after being falsely accused of theft. Later he joins the Sons of Liberty and is involved in the Boston Tea Party. Those who don't share Hollywood's obsession with America's past may experience a feeling of déjà vu watching this combination of action drama and history lesson. Veteran director Robert Stevenson — probably better known for Mary Poppins — doesn't quite succeed in capturing the sights and sounds of the American colonial era but the kids will probably enjoy it.
