Johnny BelindaWyman is a deaf-mute girl who is raped and falls pregnant. When the perpetrator returns to take away the baby, she panics and shoots him. The ensuing court case grips the imagination of the small community. Wyman won an Oscar for her sensitive portrayal of the girl, but while Negulesco steers clear of manipulating his audience, the script can't resist the temptation to dip its toe occasionally into unnecessary melodrama.
