After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.
An enigmatic young man named Chris McCandless made an indelible impression on any number of people during his short life, and you can now add Sean Penn to the list.
Into the Wild, Penn's film on McCandless' experiences, is a complete change of pace for the writer-director. It's his warmest, most celebratory and most completely realized film and, though you might not guess it from the material, it is also arguably his most personal.
Penn's film, starring a radiant Emile Hirsch, is based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book about McCandless, an unusual 24-year-old "possessed of a streak of stubborn idealism that did not mesh readily with modern existe...
In the midst of his rambling journey, starting at 22, Chris McCandless dubbed himself "Alexander Supertramp." But the restless soul at the center of Into the Wild is as much a descendant of Henry David Thoreau as he is a modern hobo.
Into the Wild, a film that explores the incessant wanderlust of Virginia native McCandless, is captivating and multifaceted. Written and directed by Sean Penn, the film is a haunting and moving experience, highlighted by evocative original music by Eddie Vedder.
Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer's fascinating non-fiction best seller upon which the film is based is bound to be satisfied by this cinematic retelling, despi...

A nice, if thats the word, film. Reminded me of a modern version of Robert Redfords "Jeremiah Johnson" . ps if you like this film, look up a book called "zen and the art of motorcycle maintainence"
"happiness..only real when shared"..the movie was great..the book was better..the philosophies discussed become evident when the ending occurs..I will leave it at that..I won't spoil the ending, but one of the better ones you will see in any movie..sad, but real..
This is my second time seeing this movie..the fist time I'd seen it was when it had first come out on DVD..I am so glad that I have watched it again here..this movie is truly inspiring, moving, and brilliantly done. A MUST SEE!
. . . a lot of comments try to demonstrate that the main character is a spoilt, ungrateful brat, or not. This is pointless.
Thing is, this story is fascinating, ambiguous (desire to get lost / very strong human relationships), very well told. And this character also is.
This movie raises questions, and this is what cinema is all about, isn't it?
Something the book says, and the film doesn't, [SPOILER]
is that there WAS a safe way to cross the river, a couple of miles away, that Chris never knew of because he didn't want to take a map. So he could have got out of it safe easily.
Just be aware that the movie, although beautiful, is tough.
