I Am Sam

I Am Sam is a warm, hard-to-resist story of a mentally challenged single father fighting to retain custody of his 7-year-old daughter. It's the kind of skilled heart-tugger that opens at this time of year, both to qualify for the Oscars--Sean Penn as the father and Michelle Pfeiffer as his attorney are particularly of note--and to attract holiday moviegoers.

There's more to this movie, however. It's an instance in which a sure-fire premise has been well developed by director Jessie Nelson and her co-writer Kristine Johnson. Hollywood gloss--gleaming cinematography, superior production design, etc.--has been put to good use by Nelson to illuminate not only the live...

Sean Penn has long been one of the best reasons for going to the movies. From Fast Times At Ridgemont High to Sweet And Lowdown, his list of great performances is lengthier than most actors' CVs. However, while his sophisticated work has garnered him awards at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice, it has been undervalued in his native America. It's perhaps for this reason that Penn plumped for the showy role of Sam Dawson.

The emotionally manipulative story of a single parent (Sean Penn) with a mental age of seven, I Am Sam falls uncomfortably between Forrest Gump and Kramer vs Kramer (what a pitch that must have made), centring as it does on a custody battle for his daughter, whose seventh birthday conveniently makes Sam an untenable parent. Great acting by all three. Penn does a great job, but I think Pfeiffer's role should have been made a little more professional and helpful in getting custody back. I have to ask myself, would I hire someone as an atty that is as loopy as she is in this movie? Yet she states she never loses? She did nothing in getting custody, it was Penn's love for his daughter in showing no one could love her like he did.
