Kathy is an emotionally unstable and neglectful woman evicted from the house she inherited from her father when she is mistakenly charged for unpaid taxes. After the immediate auction, the house is sold in a very low price to the Iranian Colonel Behrani, a refugee who sees the chance to give some stability to his family and make a profit in the resell of the property to raise money to send his beloved son to the university. Kathy has a relationship with the abusive officer Lester, who tries to force the family leave the place, ending his attempt in a tragic way.
Let House of Sand and Fog tell you a story. A story of hopes as evanescent as the drifting fog, of dreams as unreliable as a structure carelessly built out of sand.
It's a despairing narrative about the capacity we have to destroy our own lives just when we think we're doing the opposite, a story that uses exceptional acting to wrench and twist our emotions. It sends us back to words like tragedy and catharsis, because at its core this film has an inescapable, unflinching fidelity to human truth. It's a story that haunts long after it's seen, not just because we're overpowered by what happens to its characters but because, if we're honest, we see how all of it, even th...
I think that the best way to watch this film is by thinking of it in terms of theatrical tragedy. Only drama can explore these deep emotions and not leave you feeling devastated. The problem here, is that the film is not a play and is so very believable.
However, in the dvd extras one of the actors commented that true tragedy only works if you are 100% immersed in the characters and the story. Therein lies the glory of this fantastic film.
Only please be warned, unless you are a cold emotional fish, this story will hit you hard!! Enjoy.
If 'feel-good' movies lift the spirits, what exactly is the appeal of 'feel-bad' movies? Catharsis? Relief that our lives aren't as terrible as the misery onscreen? Just as special effects extravaganzas constantly up the ante on ever more elaborate spectacle, downbeat films compete to plumb successively lower depths ("I see your Mystic River, and lower you a 21 Grams"). In more ways than it intends, House Of Sand And Fog hits rock bottom.
Stung for not paying a business tax that she doesn't owe, reclusive, unemployed Kathy Niccolo (Connelly) is promptly forced out of her home. The property is immediately snapped up at a bargain price by one Colonel Behrani (King...

Andre Dubus III's bestselling novel is transformed into a richly textured tale of dreams and obsession in this heartbreaking drama from first-time director Vadim Perelman. Revolving around a formidable Oscar-nominated turn by Ben Kingsley, the slow-burning film tells the story of a former Iranian colonel reduced to working menial jobs in the US. Desperate to return his family to the prosperity they once knew, he spends his life's savings on the repossessed home of recovering addict Jennifer Connelly, only to come into tragic confrontation with the woman over the property. Drawing on his own experience as an immigrant, Perelman paints a vivid and moving picture of cultura...

Friends of the Shaw of Iran were friends of the US government..as we can see from the character played by Kingsly, the colonel brought his past with him..the sheriff local brought his to bare against him (the colonel of the middle east "other") and the county bureaucracy brought it's dysfunction along the way as catalyst for one hell of a twisted drama. A good film for those who like to be reminded how not so cut and dry cultural politics are..
the movie is a spiral, a slowly moving spiral that exponintially spirals downward. its a conflict between two forces that u either simultaneously hate or love. no ground is ever gained for the viewer as to which side to pick. perfection. 10
the gun that lester threatened the family with, and the same gun the boy (ismail) used to threaten lester, was not even loaded. it was the same gun kathy had tried to commit suicide with.
