Everyone has bad mornings. You wake up late, you stub your toe, you burn the toast...but for a man named Arthur Dent, this goes far beyond a bad day. When he learns that a friend of his is actually an alien with advanced knowledge of Earth's impending destruction, he is transported off the Earth seconds before it is exploded to make way for a new hyperspace motorway. And as if that's not enough, throw in being wanted by the police, Earth II, an insane electronic encyclopedia, no tea whatsoever, a chronically depressed robot and the search for the meaning of life, and you've got the greatest ad... venture off Earth.Read moreLess
Whimsical, low-tech and doggedly British in tone despite Tinseltown touches, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reps the long-planned movie version of scribe Douglas Adams' cult story of interstellar hitchhikers. Inheriting baggy source material, talky pic remains more smile-inducing than laugh-aloud funny and has pacing and coherence problems. Thankfully, strong visuals and sight gags punch up the package, and high public awareness of the brand name should ensure a robust opening in Blighty and other Commonwealth countries. Stateside, however, pic will need to thumb a ride on upbeat word of mouth to catch on theatrically. Home format afterlife looks heavenly.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The One day Arthur Dent wakes up to find that his best friend is an alien and that the Earth is scheduled for demolition. Eccentric British journey through a science fiction universe adapted from the works of Douglas Adams

The quest to give Douglas Adams' bestselling 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' books/radio shows the full Hollywood treatment was a long and arduous one that the author himself would not live to see fulfilled. Adams died in 2001, having worked many years to see his popular, quintessentially English science fiction universe realised with all the special effects expertise and kinetic thrills a big motion picture production affords. At one point, Adams felt he had wasted five years of his life on seeing the film made and begged his agent Ed Victor to prevent him from ever trying again.
So after being mooted for the best part of two decades, The Hitchhiker's Guide...

I really liked the original radioplay and the books, so much so that I played #42 in ice hockey and joined ZZ9pluralZAlpha - so it may not be a surprise that this film seriously disappointed me. Characterisations were fine, the did some nice special effects and they followed the plot fairly well but there were also some glaringly bad developments. Marvin should never have been spherical, Zaphods heads should not have been one under the other but side by side, and just too much felt off. It wasn't the best acted, and they cut so much out it almost didn't work as a standalone film. In fact I'd avoid it and try watching the BBC series,or listen to the audio drama, it's far superior.
