Hello, Dolly!Big-screen, big-budget adaptation of the Broadway hit, which caused a big rift between its big stars. Matthau was apparently mightily pissed off with Streisand's antics and attitudes in only her second film. She's certainly showboating on screen as determined widow matchmaker Dolly Levi, sorting out the love life of 'unmarried half-a-millionaire' Matthau, along with that of his satellites and her own in the process. Kelly's direction is colourful enough, but it is flashy to the detriment of everything else. Matthau is hardly a song-and-dance man, but you're on his side with regard to Streisand. |
