Film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. Concerns itself with Dolly Levi, a New York-based matchmaker who merrily arranges things... like furniture and daffodils and lives. A widow, she has found herself in love with a "half-a-millionaire" Yonkers merchant named Horace Vandergelder. So she proceeds to weave a web of romantic complications involving him, his two clerks, a pretty milliner and her assistant. Eventually, of course, all is sorted out, and everyone ends up with the right person.
A classic
A real feel good movie and an old favourite. I sang along with all the songs. I'd recommend it to anyone who looks a good old fashioned musical.
Big-screen, big-budget adaptation of the Broadway hit, which caused a big rift between its big stars. Matthau was apparently mightily pissed off with Streisand's antics and attitudes in only her second film. She's certainly showboating on screen as determined widow matchmaker Dolly Levi, sorting out the love life of 'unmarried half-a-millionaire' Matthau, along with that of his satellites and her own in the process. Kelly's direction is colourful enough, but it is flashy to the detriment of everything else. Matthau is hardly a song-and-dance man, but you're on his side with regard to Streisand.
