HarperA neat, hard-boiled detective story adapted by Goldman from Ross MacDonald's book The Moving Target. Newman smoulders in the lead role, a private eye hired by Bacall to find her missing husband. There are shades of The Big Sleep in the convoluted plot, and it is hardly groundbreaking stuff, sticking to Chandler-esque conventions. But Newman surrounds himself with a fine cast of actors, Wagner, Leigh and Winters putting in stand out performances. Goldman's early script is wordy but shouldered well by the actors. |
