William Shakespeare's tale of tragedy of murder and revenge in the royal halls of medieval Denmark. Claudius, brother to the King, conniving with the Queen, poisons the monarch and seizes the throne, taking the widowed Gertrude for his bride. Hamlet, son of the murdered King, mournful of his father's death and mother's hasty marriage, is confronted by the ghost of the late King who reveals the manner of his murder. Seeking revenge, Hamlet recreates the monstrous deed in a play with the help of some traveling actors to torment the conscience of the evil Claudius. In a visit with his mother, Ha... mlet expresses his anger and disappointment concerning her swiftly untimed marriage. Thinking a concealed spy in his mother's chamber to be the lurking Claudius, he mistakenly kills the meddling counselor, Polonius, father of Ophelia and Laertes. Claudius, on the pretext that Hamlet will be endangered by his subjects for the murder of Polonius, sends the prince to England.

The great play as a great movie
A vastly different film from his triumphant version of 'Henry V' 3 years previously, Olivier's version of the Danish play is not an opened-out one, but a brooding insular creation, with the camera swooping and prowling around an empty Elsinore. It means the focus is largely on the acting and the text, the latter heavily cut but no less effective, the former all that you'd expect from the finest actor-director of his generation.
Classic film of a Classic Play
This version is often called the best-acted Hamlet there ever was. Well, it's certainly a good one, and worth watching. Personally, I think the most powerful, best-acted, most complex version is that by and with Kenneth Branagh - but it's several hours long, so you may prefer this shorter version.

Blah, blah, blah. Too much dialog, not enough action. Shakespeare talks too much. It's more for the actors to show off, than for the audience's enjoyment. I recommend you make two windows; one with the movie, the other with a computer game, like Tetris or Hearts or something. Suicide is the solution for despair, wow, very encouraging.
