Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad and her best friend Penny Pingleton audition to be on The Corny Collins Show and Tracy wins. But when scheming Amber Von Tussle and her mother plot to destroy Tracy, it turns to chaos.
Hairspray John Waters' cult 1980s comedy returns to the big screen, this time as a musical based on the 2002 Broadway hit The Producers started a trend. Mel Brooks' 1968 farce, you'll recall, made a comeback in 2006 as a celluloid adaptation of its Broadway musical remake. Now Hairspray completes the same cyclical journey, returning to where it all began with a big-screen transfer of the stage show it spawned.
It's a bizarrely cannibalistic process that, in the case of the Producers film, ended up with a work that was markedly inferior to both its forebears. With Hairspray, though, it works a treat, the blend of John Waters' anarchic weirdness,...
Hairspray
What a load of crap! I turned this film off after 15 minutes. don't waste your time, avoid at all cost.
Director-choreographer Adam Shankman's buoyant stage-to-screen translation of Hairspray may not equal the comic zest of its 1988 root source, John Waters' first and still-finest mainstream feature. Nonetheless, it's one of the best Broadway-tuner adaptations in recent years -- yes, arguably even better than those Oscar-winning ones. Unpretentious, feel-good pic is low on histrionic diva wailing and MTV-style editing, high on retro movie-musical craftsmanship. Despite uneven casting among marquee thesps, it's a real crowd-pleaser. Potential sleeper could tap not just positive word-of-mouth but also various demographics underserved by the summer's pileup of CGI-...

I watched it being fully prepared that it won't make me even smile, however it made me laugh at times, as well as my dear friend, with whom I watched it on hbo. It carries more serious message under the layer of cuteness and colours. I liked it.
I actually liked it. Im not a huge musical person but this one kept me entertained. All the actors did a wonderful job. And John Travolta just cracks me up. 7/10
Gotta love Queen Latifah in this! Amanda Bynes wasn't so bad, Zack Efron (?). Nikki Blonksi was really dynamite, but John Travolta in his role, wasn't really convincing. He tried though, he tried. What I really liked about this movie and what I wasn't expecting [SPOILER]
is that it had the undertones of race and segregation and bringing everyone together. I really liked that they had the little black girl win the contest and Penny and what's his name get together at the end as an interracial couple. O and Queen Latifah singing the song about the hog head cheese and being big and blonde had me dying ;)
The songs were definitely catchy and I thought it was a great movie overall. I can't believe I waited so long to watch it. I'd give it a 10/10
I would never have pictured John Travolta in 20 years going from Danny in Grease to Edna in Hairspray! I love this movie! The music is terrific! And the unknown who plays Tracey is an amazing actress and singer. One of my favorite musicals of all time!
Lol, i loved this movie, I've seen both versions of it and both are well done, but this one is more up to beat. And a lot funnier. So I gave it 5/5 and because he's hot!!
