Grumpy Old MenLemmon and Matthau revive the old schtick for Petrie's tailor made comedy about two psychotically fractious Minnesota neighbours who both fall for the charms of an elderly widow (Ann-Margret). The material isn't very strong - apart from a delicious scene in which Lemmon's nonagenarian father (Meredith) doles out some useless advice on how to handle a woman. But you've got to be indulgent when your doddering elders take the trouble to do their old party piece for you, and these two old-timers - spurred on by the box office success of this picture - made much worse in the next few years.
