As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality. They were reintroduced to the world when international tabloids learned of a health department raid on their home, and Jackie swooped in to save her relatives.

Although I like Drew Barrymore as an actress, I really didn't like this movie. It may have been a true story, but it was just depressing really. Really sad that people can get so locked up in such a life that they never try to "change the record" even for their own good, or their family's good. If you can take that as a lesson to learn from someone's else's mistakes, then I spose it's worth a watch. Otherwise I wouldn't even recommend it for a lazy Sunday. Number 15 works until about the last 10 minutes of the movie.

I was blown away by the performances in this film. I have never been a huge fan of Jessica Lange, I always thought she was alright enough, but I didn't see her in this film, I saw the woman she was portraying. Drew did a great job as well. Very good.

I love the film although I felt that Drew Barrymore captured the nuances of Little Edie a bit better than Jessica Lange captured Big Edie.

When Big Edie cries "how can you resist" in an effort to get Little Edie to do a soft shoe dance, in the original you can plainly see that she means, if only she could get up and dance, and you can see how desperately she wishes she could and how symbiotically important to her it is that Edie get up and dance, but she does not. I felt that this was not captured well at all by Jessica Lange.

Of course, much of the nuances were well captured so it's well worth seeing..

By the end of the Maysles version it's plain that Little Edie has developed quite the crush on Al, who has probably given her more male attention than she's had for many years before that, and this is another nuance overlooked by HBO.

However, HBO does offer a better overall view of their lives than the short summer the Maysles spent in E. Hampton and it is fascinating.
