A new Disc Jockey is shipped from Crete to Vietnam to bring humor to Armed Forces Radio. He turns the studio on it's ear and becomes wildly popular with the troops but runs afoul of the middle management who think he isn't G.I. enough. While he is off the air, he tries to meet Vietnamese especially girls, and begins to have brushes with the real war that never appears on the radio.

Robin Williams received an Oscar nomination for giving here what is essentially a stand-up comedy performance. He plays a motormouth disc jockey sent to Vietnam to entertain the GIs, but, in the event, adds rather more salt, pepper and hot sauce to the place than the military brass would have preferred. Based on the case of a real US armed forces DJ, the film is distinctive for being Hollywood's first Vietnam comedy and among the first movies to treat the Vietnamese themselves as real people. The film that made Williams into a huge Hollywood star, the format letting him dazzle with his comic routines as the anarchic real-life Armed Forces Radio disc jockey Adrian Cronauer during the Vietnam War. The side of the weakly developed story that attempts to show him as a caring, sharing guy with the Vietnamese is contrived, but Levinson's direction managed to draw out of Williams a depth of feeling that lent the movie an emotional resonance. Kirby, as the uptight, idiotic lieutenant, succeeds in making funny a man who has no sense of humour. The film is also jam-packed with favourite 60s hits.
