Berlin, July, 1945. Journalist Jake Geismer arrives to cover the Potsdam conference, issued a captain's uniform for easier passage. He also wants to find Lena, an old flame who's now a prostitute desperate to get out of Berlin. He discovers that the driver he's assigned, a cheerful down-home sadist named Corporal Tully, is Lena's keeper. When the body of a murdered man washes up in Potsdam (within the Russian sector), Jake may be the only person who wants to solve the crime: U.S. personnel are busy finding Nazis to bring to trial, the Russians and the Americans are looking for German rocket s... cientists, and Lena has her own secrets.

Steven Soderbergh tries to make one like they used to and comes up short with The Good German. A post-World War II drama set amid the rubble of a bombed-out Berlin, this black-and-white backlot production endeavors to recapture the bitter romanticism of such '40s studio artifacts as Casablanca and A Foreign Affair while adding contemporary frankness. But doing what came naturally to Hollywood craftsmen 60 years ago is clearly harder than it appeared, as Soderbergh can't duplicate the look and feel of the old-fashioned entertainments he means to honor. Despite the starry cast, the public will steer clear, leaving the director's latest honorable but failed experiment t...
Good German - Bad Film
As much as I like Clooney and Blanchett, they cannot prevent this film being rather poor. The director (Soderbergh) must take the blame for this. He has spent so much time and effort seeking to create a 1940s replica film (entirely black and white film, burnt out white backgrounds, wildly over the top orchestral soundtrack) that he has simply not bothered with the pace of the film or the quality of the screenplay.
What should be a decent end of WWII thriller, set in war torn Berlin at the time of the Potsdam conference, and dealing with matters such as collaboration, war crimes, the search for the German rocket programme scientists, has been turned in to a very boring film. It lack...
Good German, The An American war correspondent returns to Berlin after World War Two and finds himself, and the German woman he loved, embroiled in a murder mystery. Recreated film noir from Steven Soderbergh, starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett
A failed academic experiment in homage, The Good German finds Steven Soderbergh tripped by his own nostalgia. Inspired by 1940s wartime classics like Casablanca, Notorious and The Third Man, Soderbergh and screenwriter Paul Attanasio (working from Joseph Kanon's novel) don't want to merely tip their hat to film noir, they want to try on the whole outfit.

Soderbergh makes great play of restricting himself to camera lenses and equipment of the day. This means The Good German unspools with the requisite one camera set-ups, screen wipes, even the flickering, linking archive clips it would have utilized had it been made in 1945, rather than just set then. The actors ...
