Dorchester, one of the toughest neighborhoods in all of Boston, is no place for the weak or innocent. Its a territory defined by hard heads and even harder luck, its streets littered with broken families, hearts, dreams. When one of its own, a 4-year-old girl, goes missing, private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro don't want the case. But after pleas from the child's aunt, they open an investigation that will ultimately risk everything -- their relationship, their sanity, and even their lives -- to find a little girl-lost.
Gone Baby Gone is by and large a notable piece of work, a strong directing debut by actor Ben Affleck that highlights attention-getting performances by Casey Affleck, the director's brother, and Tony Award nominee Amy Ryan.
But, as adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane, this brooding, somber film is also ragged around the edges and not without problematic aspects. Two shadows from the past hang over it, one affecting the kind of film it is and the other the way we perceive it.
Lehane's 1998 genre piece is set in Boston and involves private detectives Patrick Kenzie (Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (an effective Michelle Monaghan) in a tale of ...
The film itself is sometimes dark but ultimately one of the most beautiful movies you'll likely to see..
Very thought provoking.
A controversial ending, which vexed me greatly but that's what real cinema is all about.
Just bought it on dvd from the states - worth every penny.
Stupidly delayed release over here, due to our ridiculous sensibilities.
Absolutely superb!
Gone Baby Gone Private investigator Casey Affleck searches for a missing child in brother Ben's first directorial feature
Fate has a strange sense of humour. Last year the distributors of Ben Affleck's directorial debut made the laudable decision to pull it from the Times BFI London Film Festival line-up and put back its UK release date, lest its child abduction plot offend audience sensibilities with its unfortunate similarities to the Madeleine McCann case.
Almost a year later, Gone Baby Gone appears, and it would be a shame if this intelligent, thoughtful adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 1998 novel suffers as a consequence of unwitting associations with real events...

Everytime I see this movie I want to punch that mother in the head..She's a horrible example of a human being and I spent more time hating her and being angry at her then anyone else..
I think that mother has played a crackhead mother in many movies..Well she plays the part perfect..
The Afleck brothers really pulled it off with this one. Excellent performances from all the cast, all horribly believable, and a bleak premise that just got darker as the film went on. 5/5.
A great movie that leaves you thinking - what if doing the right thing is gonna have a bad outcome, would you do it? In the end scene i was on the notion that after [SPOILER]
seeing the little girls mother had not changed her ways, he would have abducted the little girl and gone looking for his ex girlfriend and raise the kid themselves.
i love'd it a lot. just didn't like casey affleck as the main dude. love'd the story and the ending. ben affleck great as a director and should never act again. i definitely recommend. 3 1/2 of 4 stars excellent.
This movie was thrilling!! It shows how some people don?t change even if they are given a second chance... which is quite sad... Ending tragical yet unfortunately realistic :-(
its a sad movie..it really got to me when they found the little boy it was heartbreaking..patrick had to make a very hard choice with the little girl, if i was in that situation im not sure which way i would of gone
Well made flick with great characters and acting. Really brings up a great point about how hard it can be facing moral rights vs legal rights, and made me wonder what i would do and feel if faced with such a decision! 4.5/5 and going on my playlist.
