Go Tell the SpartansMade in the same year as The Deer Hunter, this fairly straightforward war movie has none of the soul-searching of Cimino's film, nor of those that followed. However, set in 1964, as the French colonial war was ending and the Americans were beginning to commit themselves to Vietnam, it does, with hindsight, point to the futility of the war at a very early stage. Lancaster is gritty as a major who has a new group of advisers under his command. Instead of heroes and villains, the US top brass is seen as being both stupid and greedy and the South Vietnamese as corrupt. |
