Get Smart is a film mistaken about its own identity. As a reworking of one of the great 1960s TV comedies, you'd think being funny would be its main goal. But you would be wrong. Very, very wrong.

Like its protagonist, in-over-his-head secret agent Maxwell Smart, Get Smart yearns to be something it's not. Unaccountably eager to walk in the footsteps of James Bond, Get Smart neglects the laughs and amps up the action, resulting in a not very funny comedy joined at the hip to a not very exciting spy movie. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

This contemporary remake of the iconic '60s TV comedy could have used more of the sly wit of show creators Buck Henry and Mel Brooks and less of the antic humor and overblown action sequences that typify Hollywood's summer output.

While the film is breezily entertaining, it also is surprisingly generic, despite the likable Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart. Carell does a fine, goofy job. But you wish he could have tapped into his nuanced and darker comic side that is so hilariously revealed in TV's The Office. Anne Hathaway is about as effective as Agent 99 as can ...

Get Smart is Superb???Heh?!!!
I cannot believe a reviewer described this film as superb! Obviously this person is easily pleased!! This movie was a time filler, and nothing else. Anne Hathaway looked stunning at the ball but her main man didn't cut the mustard! He just seems to be too old to be acting silly as he does. I confess I do not always find him funny. There are some funny scenes but they are not what I would call laugh out loud funny. This is a good kiddies flick, but personally I was bored throughout and could't wait for it to finish .

Everything that made the original series popular is lost in this movie. This is typical. Someone latches onto the idea of making a movie based on a popular TV series, rewrites their own story, and winds up with a 'conception' that ignores the nuances that made it popular enough to catch their attention in the first place. The only similarity here is the names only. Even the famous catch phrases were butchered. Terence Stamp as Siegfried comes across as forgotten how to act or he had godawful directing. The dead-pan Siegfried was meaningless. Obviously the writers never watched the show. Make your conceptual original and quit with trying to make a buck on an established name you no-talent hacks.

the title is just the opposite of what it is.. "stupid".

such a lame movie.. it's trying too hard to be funny but fails miserably. lame story, lame acting, lame actors, lame dialog, lame gadgets, lame everything.. i wouldnt recommend it.. 2/5
