"Fugitive Pieces" is a powerful, poetic, and emotionally-charged drama about love, loss and redemption. The film tells the story of Jakob Beer, a man whose life is haunted by his childhood experiences during WWII. As a child in Poland he is orphaned during wartime then saved by a compassionate Greek archeologist. Over the course of his life, he attempts to deal with the losses he has endured. Through his writing, and then through the discovery of true love, Jakob is ultimately freed from the legacy of his past.
An earnest film from a serious-minded director, Fugitive Pieces comes from the extraordinary novel by Anne Michaels, whose flourishes of lyrical prose makes it a challenge for any filmmaker to adapt into a coherent narrative. Certainly Jeremy Podeswa is as good a director as any to attempt the task. With earlier films such as The Five Senses (1999), the Canadian auteur has a proven track record when it comes to taking on difficult subject matter.

The book for this movie is a modern Canadian classic that has quickly become a staple on every CAN-LIT course. I loved the book. But honestly, I think I like the movie more. It is such an incredible adaptation with very strong performances.. I think it visually captures the themes of the novel perfectly, and then it goes a step further, even. 8/10
It was a strong year for Canadian screen-writers. "The Stone Angel", "Blindness", "The Tracey Fragments" , "Young People __ ing " "Fugitive Pieces". Nice.
