A group of four teenage girls in the San Fernando Valley, and the usual problems teenagers has to cope with. Deidre is fascinated by sex, Madge is unhappily overweight, Annie is into drugs and Jeanie has to take care of all of them. They think that the school is crap, their boyfriends immature and the grown-ups come from another planet.

The slight story of four girls growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Lyne's debut is an uninspired character study. Foster, Currie, Kagan and Stroh have to put up with the tribulations of teenagerdom: immature boyfriends, interfering adults, school, their figures, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Well acted and surprisingly sincere, the film fails because it's so humourless. Focusing on the problems of growing, but ignoring the fun and madness of it all, short-changes the audience. The mother of one of the characters comments that the girls are like '40-year-olds in teenage bodies' - true, and this makes for dour viewing.
