In the year 2065, a meteor has crashed onto Earth unleashing an invading race of millions of strange phantom-like alien creatures who roam the earth, decimating field and city alike, threatening to extinguish life itself. But when a brilliant young female scientist, Dr. Aki Ross makes a last stand on Earth with the help of a ragtag team of soldiers against an invasion of alien phantoms. She seeks information about their purpose and physiology, assisted by her mentor Dr. Sid and the Deep Eyes military squad of courageous Captain Gray Edwards Aki's old friend. An impressive spectable but lacking in that little something extra
I don't think you can say this is a bad film. It has an interesting premise, the outline of interesting characters, a superb voice cast and visual effects which are astounding. However, for me it suffers from two key flaws. One, a weak script that progresses the plot but doesn't round out its characters enough - a key issue in a film where all the characters are animated, and thus lacking the subtlety of expression which real actors can use to convey so much. The other problem, at least for me, was the irritating 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' hippy rubbish they kept spouting. All this stuff about the spirits of the Earth, returning to Gaia and enriching life experiences. Y...
Could be better
This is an alright film but could be better. They've combined a great graphics with an excellent inventiveness when coming to the world and the technology, however the film's story line could be better and doesn't come close to the undisputable reputaion of the Final Fantasy series.
All in not a bad film but could probably benifit from bieng a little longer which would allow the story to develope better.

As Beautiful put it, the CG animation was remarkable, and let's not forget it was made in 2001. I had no idea what the story was going to be about, i only wondered into this movie by curiosity without knowing what it was, i'd only briefly seen a picture of it in a cartoon magazine several years back. I was agreeably surprised by the story (i'm a sucker for Asimov). The storyline was perfect, entertaining AND intelligently plotted, despite the dialogue that at times easily fell prey to clich?. Only Alec Baldwin's voicing was pitiful as Captain Gray and had made me roll my eyes and smile because of the cheesy quality, the others gave decent performances. The idea of the phantoms seizing human souls by way of tentacles is an original and praiseworthy concept i greatly admire. Since it was more of an action and plotting dependant movie, the emotions weren't greatly explored [SPOILER]
(the relationship between Gray and Aki was too superficially portrayed)
. Some would reproach it to be confusing and accuse it for lack of plot, i say just go with the flow and assume there's an explanation for the little things so you don't get tangled up in total confusion during the film. Pretty good if you like sci-fi action and a complex plot. 4/5.
