Farewell My Lovely
This is a richly atmospheric and affectionate tribute to Raymond Chandler and 1940s film noir, with Robert Mitchum as Philip Marlowe. It's amazing that Mitchum came so late to a role that he seems born to play — the corrupt mess of Los Angeles hangs on those rumpled eyelids in a mesmeric performance of world-weariness. Also impressive is Charlotte Rampling as the alluring Velma, who gives Mitchum a smile that, he says, he can feel in his hip pocket. Old hands such as John Ireland and Sylvia Miles add layers of nostalgia, and look out, too, for Sylvester Stallone, just a year before Rocky shot him to world stardom. The director is Dick Richards, who chose to make this rather than Jaws.
