Fade to Black
A homage to Hollywood's golden age, but with a difference! When a movie fanatic's loser lifestyle tips him over the edge into insanity, he embarks on a killing spree disguised as his favourite film characters, such as Dracula and the Mummy. Vernon Zimmerman turns in an intelligent and imaginative movie, with plenty of cinematic references and in-jokes to enjoy, including one of the best ever send-ups of the Psycho shower scene, but an excess of violence leaves a bitter aftertaste. Dennis Christopher's carefully judged central performance is made ridiculous by turning him into just another slasher killer. Still, this is one of the darkest teenage-angst movies of the decade. And look out for Mickey Rourke in an early film role.
