Extreme Ops
Extreme sports enthusiasts go toe-to-toe with Serbian terrorists in an action movie so dire it makes xXx look like Die Hard
Most people saw films such as xXx and Vertical Limit as good excuses for not going to the cinema. Execs in Hollywood, alas, seized upon such atrocities as a good excuse for creating a new genre - the 'x-treme' action movie. Extreme Ops is an example of this genre at its most inept. Not so much a movie as an incredibly long, badly-edited Pepsi Max advertisement, Christian Duguay's film stars Rufus Sewell and Rupert Graves as, respectively, a commercials director and a producer who have the misfortune to run into a Serbian terrorist while shooting an extreme sports-centred promo in Austria. Cue a frantic dash across a hostile environment complete with tons of stunts, plenty of risible dialogue and masses of appallingly assembled action sequences. Chasms and crevices are the least of Extreme Ops' obstacles. Try as the young cast might, it's simply impossible to think of ex-'EastEnder' Joe Absolom and co as action stars. But while the more youthful talent can be forgiven for their poor script selection, the old hands deserve scorn. Rupert Graves is a good actor who should know better. Rufus Sewell, however, has appeared in so many terrible movies it's safe to say he doesn't. A hypnotically bad film, Extreme Ops makes base-jumping seem about as exciting as lawn bowls. Verdict A horrible genre produces a terrible film. In future, Britain would be better leaving this sort of things to Hollywood- at least that way the blame for foisting this facile cinematic form upon the world can be laid solely at their door. |
