When gorgeous Consuela Castillo enters his classroom, however, his protective veneer dissolves. Her raven-haired beauty both captivates and unsettles him. Kepesh's need for Consuela becomes an obsession, but ultimately his jealous fantasies of betrayal drive her away. Shatte... red, Kepesh faces up to the ravages of time, immersing himself in work and confronting the loss of old friends. Elegy Ben Kingsley plays an ageing college professor whose passionate relationship with beautiful student Pen??lope Cruz has unforeseen consequences. A dark, low-key adult drama, based on the novel by Philip Roth
An adaptation of acclaimed author Philip Roth's novel 'The Dying Animal', Elegy follows the life of ageing literary professor David Kepesh (Kingsley). Having abandoned his family years ago, he now lives in a state of "emancipated manhood" - sleeping with his young students, indulging in regular no-strings-attached liaisons with a businesswoman closer to his own age (Clarkson), and discussing sexual exploits with his best friend George O'Hearn (Hoppe...
shame about the last 15 minutes...
very close to perfection. i thought i was watching a new favourite of mine, but then the last chapter came and i felt so disappointed... great performances by Kingsley, Hopper and Clarkson, amazing cinematography, great direction, but the last part concerning Consuela and Kepesh was absolutely unecessary. It made the film too long, the ending cliched and obvious. Also, is it just me or was Cruz a little bit old for the part? But don't be put off by this. 80% of the film is simply sublime!
True to its title, Elegy is a spare, meditative and melancholy film.
It is a deeply affecting and profoundly observed saga about love, art, beauty and, especially, mortality.
While everyone in the ensemble cast is noteworthy, Ben Kingsley gives a stellar performance as a solitary college professor obsessed with a beautiful Latina student, played by Penelope Cruz. Kingsley plays his part with affecting depth and nuance. His self-absorbed character is not always likable, but is fascinating and even understandable. His interactions with a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet (Dennis Hopper) provide insight into the workings of his mind.

Wow! I really enjoyed this movie. I think everyone can relate to it somehow. It was made beautifuly, and it did cause me a few tears. I do wish it had a different ending. Kind of left you wondering.
The credits said that this movie was based on a book titled "The dying animal". I will have to pick it up.
If people can actually get past the actors and take a good look at the roles.. what the film represents they will see the real beauty of this film. It is life's twists and turns and all ones we as individuals will face throughout our lives.. very touching in parts and a good perspective of an older man..well worth watching. If you are after a quick fix movie this isn't it.. this is a film with meaning and sentiment.
good, emotional and worth watching, How come Megavideo is only letting you watch a certain amount before cutting out and saying wait an hour and watch the rest or pay??
This movie was delicately put together with such love and passion and yes even the sad parts made me feel this sense of more understanding in lifes loves if it's family, friends, lover's or "the one" that you should never take life for granted and life is a journey that may come with regrets but should never be dissapointed upon cause we would'nt be who we are today!.. Great movie perfect acting from Kingsley and cruz. 7/10
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It definitely reminded me of certain mistakes I've made in my own life. Unfortunately the only fairy-tale ending was a necessary lesson learned. I must add that Penelope Cruz is definitely a "work of art".
Penelope Cruz has remarkable breasts. Anything production with Kingsley is first-class. Even though people say this movie has been done before many times it is ubiquitous to the fact that people spend more time planning and dreaming than living. What makes this story unique is that it can apply to a scholarly man of art, poetry, music, culture, and language; with a woman who has no fear to live her life and take chances which is still no guarantee to a self fulfilling life. [SPOILER]
This is what I believe hurt David the most about Consuela's illness.
4/5 stars for great acting and for the notion of a fling does not always stay that way (even if you want it to be).
Kingsley and Cruz both give performances that rank among the best of their recent careers..all by themselves making a terrifically flat movie seem marginally human
I liked this movie but it was so depressing. If you are sad or not feeling good don't watch this one because it won't cheer you up - that's what I know for sure . . .
I was in a May September romance so I can identify with the emotion of the story. It was a good reminder for me. Sir Ben was great..and I have been in love with Ms. Cruz for a long time so I don't have to say anymore..
